Can we talk about the recent mechanics that all require some kind of external minigame? Im talking about attractions, the ring tempts you, dungeons, i took a break from magix during the pandemic, and when i came back, all these super dense mechanics came up and it infuriates me

Built this commander when it got all the support from the Disguise mechanic. It’s a lot of fun, but pretty mentally taxing to remember what morphs you have e in front of you.

I have been brewing a lot this past year or two. Went through a period of financial difficulty and had to sell some of my decks to make ends meet. Because of making so many decks in such a short period of time, I found that I was not getting enough practice in with most of my decks. Some were super straight forward (looking at you Sheoldred, Mimeoplasm, and Yennett), but then others like my Pirate kindred deck, Brenard food deck, and Thalia and Gitrog landfall deck would take such long turns. Had to just sit down and play a few games to really get the ins and outs so as to not make my turns take 10 minutes each.

Like the Grave Pact example, I'm cutting Sphere of resistance and Thalia, Guardian of thraben from my Heliod's Stax deck just to see my playgroup more happy and more willing to let me win the game. hahahaha Ps: The trinisphere will stay.

"Iona will self regulate." Meanwhile in reality: *One or two players are completely locked out of the game and can't do anything. They're already at a disadvantage because they're playing a one or two colored deck.* Iona is an asymmetrical lock piece which makes it so one specific person can't play the game. It is a worse feeling than playing against winter orb or stasis. Its honestly a worse feeling bully card than Emrakul. I'm surprised it was legal as long as it was.

I love Ojer Taq, I had him in my Vampire Demon deck but moved him to my Ceaser deck. The more tokens the better with Ceasers ability and the fact that to get rid of Ojer you have to exile him or he always comes back, just crazy helpfull. Got him and anointed procession so i sac a creature with Ceasers ability and instead of getting 2 soldiers, i get 12 then ping my opponent for a minimum 12 damage. Its amazing.

You lost me at swapping out Razaketh. That's the most powerful demon in the deck and a wincon in itself. He is not that expensive and absolutely amazing.

Dana, if you really want a deck that challenges you and takes you out of your comfort zone, you could always make a mutate deck 👀 😂

I struggled building my mono black deck, despite black being my favorite color. I relate with Dana as a builder, and most mono-black commanders didn't offer me a niche I got excited for. Endrek Sahr with Illness in the Ranks (and every other similiar effect) to create 6 death triggers for every 6 cost creature i cast. Carrion to sacrifice a 20/20 Minion of the Wastes for 27 death triggers in one turn. It became unique in that it creates a lot of death without sacrificing, where Endrek is the problem but so are all these scary 6 drops.

Instead of the 99 it should be the 119.

The Eleventh Doctor being so underpowered compared to the Tenth seems sadly accurate to how he is treated in the community. 11 is my absolute favorite Doctor and I have tried so hard to make it work and its so clunky.

My jaheira+agent of the iron throne deck is one of the most rewarding decks to play because it turns into a machine of value that actually turns into a solid win con instead of durdling

Building WB Spellslinger in Firja was a whole exercise. That as a strategy is not exactly within the scope of the podcast today but thats such an out there color bend exercise that it felt like I was making a Rube Goldberg machine out ot dispirate parts. I love that deck, it felt like I really made something different and unique, like what other deck could you legitimately consider Abolish to be good in?

I think commander players really really under value temple tbinking they’re giga brain geniuses. Do you know how much mana a land needs to tap to for to be broken? 2. Just run more lands, you probably need to be running more anyways and temple is fine

Started commander on karador - used it a bunch in cedh and ran ghave for a long time. Recently came back and made full lists of both without combos and man navigating that is dificult but i LOVE both off them

Dana, i am on the same boat for i feel on red aswell. Though i found a deck that is not about beat face fast but ramp up to do big spells. The commander is Orthion, hero of Lavabrink. Get to enough mana to make 5 tokens of on particular creature on your board can win games by themselves. Ex: Fanatic of Mogis, and Terror of the Peaks deal more than 120 damage to each or split up. I also love that you can also hit legendary creatures aswell.

9:55 Um, not tryin' to be an ass, but isnt that the problem with ALL of the two colored pairs? Each of these have a primary strategy that rarely breaks the mold. Like simic always draws cards and does landfall. Selsnya always gies wide and does counter stuff. Why ALWAYS pick on Boros? Ive been playing since Ice Age and have seen each pairing grow and form an 'identity'. Why does no one complain when we get a 50th izzet commander that cares about artifacts, spellslinger and instants and sorceries? Each pairing gas to have something they regularly do. That way players have a gyideline.

The ‘behind the scenes’ notes in this video were honestly fascinating. Having to balance the theme, breadth of options, reprint value, etc highlighted just how difficult it is to construct these decks in the first place, and gave me a better appreciation for the work that goes into them.

I really like all of these submissions, but I will say I think only the Yurlok deck stuck to the prompt. The Brion deck is likely to gain quite a bit of life from the lifelink on the commander making it be around for a long time. Karlach is just a typal deck. Sure it's not a heavily supported type so a lot of the creatures aren't the powerhouses you see in the more popular types, but nothing about that shouts "live fast, die young" in my opinion. If I were to build one of these it would definitely be Brion, but I voted for Yurlok.

Playing against a glissa sunseeker deck would be cancer for many of my decks. If you commander is an artifact or if you’re not in green, that’s commander is going to pick you apart.

In regards to Land destruction would you put Ajani Vengeant in same category as armageddon? as a planewalker it will take a few turns to get to his ult and I personally think its better to have it as an option even if you never use it and just use the - ability instead. What do you think?

I know my opinion isn't popular on this. But I run the fast lands and the turns I need lands to come into play Untapped they're always untapped. Once I get to turn 4 it can hurt but at turn 5 and after if a land enters tapped it makes no difference. I've probably already won or mana isn't a issue. I need 4 mana to get going. Once I hit that point I'm set for the rest of the game. I absolutely do not want my turns 1-4 slowed down in any way. And Fast lands enter untapped turns 1 to 3. My deck isn't cEDH btw... I highly doubt it could stand up to any cEDH list it has no way to fight them and can't out race them. High power maybe? but the list hasn't been updated in years so who knows.

Building decks for other people as gifts has really broadened my play style scope. I playtest with it so I can show them the ins and outs even though it might not be something I usually enjoy.

Glissa Sunseeker can fight your own artifacts. She be treated as a sac outlet for modular cards (counters deck) or for cards like Ugin's nexus/ichor wellspring.

I am NOT beating the UB consumer allegations. I have a Drizzt deck (AFR), Volo deck (AFR), Mr House deck (Fallout), Cass, hand of vengeance deck (fallout), additionally all of the fallout precons, a 40k precon, and a LOTR precon. My most anticipated set is the Final Fantasy set and my most bought set was Baldur’s Gate… I am the problem child 😵‍💫

Maybe the Glissa deck can be about ways of generating huge amounts of mana, permanents that make you don't lose unspent mana and a bunch of mana sinks for those. Just throwing what came to mind, in hopes it helps the journey n.n

You know you're in too deep into magic when you think running 30 basics is basically an unthinkably weird scenario, when that's like, half of all decks I see.

I feel like the the hosts really aren't counting the expense-to-quality ratio consistently.

This just reinforces my view of deck building commander as an art form more than a science. You guys spend an hour going over a buncha different cards, all of them turning up with the same conclusion : it depends on the deck. And even if a card is “win more” in your deck. So what? It’s cool, man. Each land tapping for 300 mana is cool. Turning your 9/9 tramplers into 11/11 tramplers is cool. Turning a hundred tokens sideways and doming someone for a hundred is cool. Isn’t that why we play commander? Sid Meier, maker of Civilization, once said “Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game." I think that absolutely is the case here.
